Freedom 17*

Designed for production in glass/kevlar/carbon and for strip planking
Length:17’ Beam:33" Displ:420 lbs. (with 2 crew)
The Freedom 17 on the Wye River in Midland, Ontario

The Freedom 17 was designed for Bluewater Canoes in 1990 and is now also offered as a set of plans for woodstrip construction through Bear Mountain Boat Shop. Still one of my favourite canoes, it features an asymmetrical hull with a slim bow, maximum beam just aft of the middle, and filled out stern sections to reduce the resistance. Because of the slight tumblehome this canoe is a wonderful solo boat, but most of the time it can be found heading off on canoe trips with two avid canoeists on board. A fast responsive tripping canoe that's also easy to build.
